Obama Mideast Watch: The Prez-Elect's First Words

obama-jazeera110508

Barack Obama's speech in Chicago late last night contained glancing references to the Middle East, the first glimpse into his mindset as the president-in-waiting, as he prepares to set up his transition team for taking office in January.

He referred to America's "two wars" in Iraq and Afghanistan as among the top challenges that "are the greatest of our lifetime." He paid tribute to the "brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us." A supporter of the Afghan war and fierce critic of the Iraq invasion, he clearly understands that he has now inherited both.

Obama went on to make an eloquent promise to restore American leadership in the world, on the basis of a shared destiny with all of humanity, and emphasizing the power of American ideals rather than American gun power. "To those who would tear the world down"--an apparent reference to terrorists and their sponsors--he warned, "We will defeat you." He added, "To those who seek peace and security, we support you."

We'll need to wait and see what policies Obama actually adopts and what actions he actually takes once he becomes president. But with the partisan politics of the campaign behind him, the international and Middle East references in the historic acceptance address seem to be a serious reaffirmation of some of his campaign stands.

Obama's promise of leadership and support for peace and security is in line with his vow to reinvigorate the Arab-Israeli peace process and seek a negotiated solution to the Iran nuclear standoff. His warning "to those who would tear the world down" may have been aimed not only at al-Qaeda and other Islamic extremist groups but at the Iranian regime as well--in keeping with Obama's vow to get tough with Iran if it refuses to go along. The speech was not the place for proposing or reaffirming specific policies, but Obama was notably silent about Iraq. Perhaps his labeling it as one of the "greatest" challenges of our lifetime," and his praise of U.S. troops there, are signs that President Obama will be more careful about the potentially explosive repercussions of a U.S. withdrawal than candidate Obama was able to be.

  1. Words are great, but actions speak louder. Obama's first presidential action was to appoint a Jewish guy as Chief of Staff. Oh, boy. Can't wait for all the ME hope for an Obama presidency dissipate through a flood of Israel/AIPAC conspiracy theories.

  2. You are so correct cgtx!

    Do you recall these words?

"In the long run, there is no JUSTICE without FREEDOM. There can be no human rights without LIBERTY. All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know the United States will not ignore your oppression or excuse your oppressors. When you stand for liberty, we stand with you."-President George W. Bush, Second Inaugural Address

IMAGINE if only W [ok-his speech writers] had actually THOUGHT of Israel and how Palestinians are denied human rights and are oppressed by the now 41 year military occupation of their land!

While i am ecstatic that we the people are not stuck with a McCain/Bible Spice Administration, I am NOT holding my breath for a change i can believe in with VP Biden, a blatant Zionist.

When Senator Biden spoke with Shalom TV he stated:

"There is this inextricable tie between culture, religion, ethnicity that most people do not understand…You don't have to be a Jew to be a Zionist, I am a Zionist."

Biden is apparently CLUELESS that "Christian Zionism is a contradiction in terms…Zionism deviates from the heart of the New Testament…Christian Zionism is adding fuel to the tensions between Muslims, Christians and Jews…If the Christian Zionists' agenda is realized, it will mean the death of Palestinian Christianity in the Holy Land…Zionism is militarizing the church…Christian Zionists overwhelmingly supported the war in Iraq and continue to support oppressive Israeli measures in the West Bank…the slaughter of [1,255,026 Iraqis*] goes virtually unnoticed and unchallenged because of their belief that President George W. Bush is a dedicated Christian who is carrying out the will of God…The 'blind spot' of Christian Zionists is the fact that the Palestinian people, every day and in every aspect of their lives are living under an oppressive military occupation…Unlike the prophets of the Old Testament Christian Zionists have no prophetic words of reprimand for the State of Israel."

  3. Umm, Eileen, I guess my post was another example of how sarcasm doesn't translate well through print. I fervently believe there is no Zionist/AIPAC/Israeli conspiracy that controls the U.S. government. I was poking fun at those who do believe such a conspiracy exists, many of whom post here (or at least used to before the comments page format change).

  4. Let's just clarify one thing: it's now 4:00 PM EST on Nov. 5 and Rahm Emmanuel is only rumored to be Obama's pick.

No network or organization can control the US government completely. AIPAC, arguably the second most powerful lobbying organization in America, has one sole purpose: to advance Israel's interests and Israel's interests only. At their last pep rally, they hosted nearly every bigwig in US politics. They have major influence over our politicians and often to the detriment of greater America's well-being. AIPAC has pushed our politicians to pass FISA, the wiretapping act, a possible naval blockade and act of war against Iran on Israel's behalf, and the Patriot Act plus revisions. They have been exerting this influence, sometimes illegally, since the creation of Israel. In addition, a huge Israeli spy ring spanning the entire country was uncovered after 9/11. Why did this spy ring not notify at least one US intelligence agency? Are we not allies?
There are reasons why one may find suspicious Rahm Emmanuel's possible appointment to Obama's chief of staff. Amongst those are Emmanuel's proven success with finding big-time political donors in the Jewish community for the Clinton administration back in the day. Who are the big time donors in the Jewish community now? AIPAC activists. As I've said before, I know many Jews and Israelis in America who are not supporters of AIPAC's ideologies.

Before we begin worrying about Obama's plans for the Middle East, however, let us worry about the last two months we have to spend with Bush still in the White House and the threats Israel made about striking Iran before the official swearing in on January 20.

  5. Oh boy Scott, too late for your request to do that. TIME's own bloggers have their full share of blame for the present state of the board.

Walk the walk before getting up on your pedestal again.

  6. "His warning "to those who would tear the world down" may have been aimed not only at al-Qaeda and other Islamic extremist groups but at the Iranian regime as well--in keeping with Obama's vow to get tough with Iran if it refuses to go along."

Which world? only few countries in world are tearing down the world, two being Israel and USA, since end of WWII Israel has been tearing down the western part of Middle-East and still occupying a good chunk of territories from her neighbors, US is tearing down Middle-East and still occupies few countries not to mentioning puppetering other puppet countries in the region and the world, one have to clean his own act before preaching to others.

Finally for those optimistic people who believe that change is possible, think again, first act of elected president was to put Israelis man as chief of staff, second most powerful post in White House after himself, and we will see more Israelis men occupying unelected post in new administration as it was in times of Clinton, I can not think of any English or French or any other foreign country men having being penetrated so deep in to political/media/economy centers of US with such affinity toward Israel regardless of US or other countries hopes and aspirations for the world!

  7. Joe, thanks for making my conspiracy prediction come true. It's a great way to start off the day.

  8. Rahm Emmanuel is Jewish. He served as a civilian volunteer in the Israeli Army during the 1991 Gulf War. His father was a member of Irgun and a strong supporter of AIPAC. Obama's speech at AIPAC was set up by Emmanuel. He also personally introduced Obama to every member of AIPAC's board. Emmanuel has criticized Palestinians and Arab countries for not doing enough to quell intra-Palestinian violence, and he has also condemned Palestinian leaders.

Now that all of this is out in the open, the correct response is: so what? Who cares if Rahm Emmanuel has done these things? Yes he has close ties to the Jewish Community and to AIPAC. That doesn't mean he will be hawkishly pro-Israel or push for a bombing strike against Iran. Emmanuel's positions may turn out to be quite moderate.

Regardless, Obama will still control policy in his administration. So quit judging Emmanuel based on his associations and religious preference. Those that do so are no better than those who frivilously question Obama's patriotism based on his associations with Ayers, Wright, and Khalidi.

  9. Here's what they'll say inside the Israeli cabinet once Obama takes over as President:
